Core Strength

You’ve maybe heard that to improve core strength you should “ditch the sit-ups.”  This is because the core is much more than just our superficial abdominal muscles and a six-pack.  The core includes muscles that stabilize and control the spine, the pelvis, and the pelvic floor.  Core strength makes a difference in our posture, body mechanics, and balance to ease daily activities and improve athletic ability.  A strong core will help protect the spine and the joints of the body, preventing injuries or easing existing pain and dysfunction.

Step one is learning to “find” and engage the core.  Next is learning and regularly practicing exercises correctly to strengthen the core safely.  The ultimate goal is to be able to engage your core during activity.  It can take time and patience to develop core strength, but your body will thank you.

Not sure if you need to improve your core strength?  There is no one method of core strengthening that will work for everyone.  Consider scheduling a Physical Therapy or Personal Training appointment with us for an assessment.  We can guide you through any muscle imbalances you may have and create programming specifically for your unique needs and goals. There is a wide variety of options to choose from, and we can help find what will work best for you.
