"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being
and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."
-World Health Organization, 1948
How do you define health? We often rely on our weight, blood pressure or cholesterol to tell us if we are healthy. But what if those numbers are all "normal" and you still don't feel well? Do you also consider your career, finances and relationships as part of your overall health and wellness?
It is my belief that there is no one thing that can define or measure true health and wellness. Our personal definition of health, our health goals and how we measure health will even change over time. In my 30's and early 40's I was a busy wife and mom, an avid road cyclist and ran trail half-marathons, so my nutrition, sleep, exercise etc. needed to support those goals. In my late 40's and early 50's, my time and energy have been more focused on opening and growing a new business so my nutrition and exercise goals have shifted to support mental focus and clarity, stress management and heart health.
In health and wellness, there is no finish line. I believe it is important to strive for balance in mind, body and spirit health and wellness, acknowledging that the balance is constantly shifting and evolving. Take a few moments to reflect on your current definition of health and your health goals. Do your lifestyle choices support your goals? Why or why not? What changes would you need to make to better support your goals? Now what changes are you willing to make to achieve your goals?
As I said in the opening paragraph, we often rely on our weight, blood pressure or cholesterol to tell us if we are healthy. We therefore often believe if we just diet and exercise more we will be healthy. If you're tired of the diet and exercise mentality, at Statera we offer something different. Consider scheduling a free consultation or appointment with one of our coaches, or join us for our "Healthier Me" workshop*.
